Gerb
Not to butt in, but it was probably me who you're thinking about when it comes to Dale Robertson--and he's not the answer. I met him last month in Oklahoma along with four other celebs. He wasn't rude, but he wasn't the friendliest. Bill Hale, Monte's brother, was by far the most gracious. He told me to come by anytime (we live near each other). Gerb

No, not really, since we may not have met him at that film festival. Can you give us a hint as to what genre of film he was in before and after the hiatus? Or --- leading man or character? Or --------- ? > > Dan N. > > http://www.silentfilmguide.com > http://dan-navarros-blog.blogspot.com

This person was NEVER a leading man, always a supporting actor. Also... In one of his film appearances, this person -- who is 100 per cent male -- played a FEMALE. No, he didn't play a man who dressed as a female. He played a female! Got it now? Dan N. http://www.silentfilmguide.com http://dan-navarros-blog.blogspot.com
pintorini
I am dying to know the answer!
Bill_McCrary
Is it one of the people from "Freaks"?
daneldorado
Bill McC wrote: "Is it one of the people from "Freaks"? No, it isn't. Over on the TQ for Beginners thread, today I was forced to post the answer to one of my questions, because after one week, nobody had guessed the correct answer. If nobody on this thread guesses the correct answer to: What person owns the record for the longest period of time between screen appearances? then, after one week passes, I will post the answer. But you know, this is a question that I thought could be answered by ANY good movie buff with access to a computer. On Tuesday, October 31, I'll post the correct answer... unless one of you guys or gals comes up with it first. ayresorchids
After doing a bit of research, I think I may have it: Jack Totheroh? He isn't someone I'd ever heard of, but I found that he played a female infant in The Bachelor's Baby (1915) and then portrayed a cameraman in Chaplin (1992). And he's still around, born in 1914 and appeared at a film festival last year.
daneldorado
YES! Ayres has it -- it's Jack Totheroh! There were 77 years between his two and only film appearances. And you're right... when Jack was one year old (or less), he played a baby GIRL! BTW, when I saw him a year ago, he was 91 and alert, walking ****, and wearing a nice smile. He has led a good life, and life has been good for him. Ayres: You've said you're a female lady woman girl, right? Okay, your turn at bat. ayresorchids
Thanks, Dan! Here's another: I didn?t make a movie in the '20s, but I played many a silent starring role. In the '30s I was back on the scene as an auntie or ma, and in the '40s I even did some singing! Who am I?
daneldorado
Ethel Barrymore? Dan N.
ayresorchids
Nope, not Ethel. Eight years younger.
daneldorado
Then you are: Elisabeth Risdon. Dan N. http://www.silentfilmguide.com http://dan-navarros-blog.blogspot.com Message was edited by: daneldorado
ayresorchids
Right! We just saw her in a very silly but rather sweet Bob Crosby musical called Let's Make Music. And she sang (more or less!).
bradtexasranger
I second that! That movie was so sweet :-)
daneldorado
Okay, here's one you ought to get quickly. I know there have been posthumous Oscar awards -- Peter Finch, Howard Ashman, et al. -- but this is ridiculous. I was nominated for the Oscar nearly SIXTEEN MONTHS after I died! Who am I? bradtexasranger
Are you Spencer Tracy, perchance?
daneldorado
No, I'm not Spencer Tracy. Tracy died of a heart attack on June 10, 1967. He received a posthumous Academy nomination as Best Actor for GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER (1967), but the Oscar awards show was on April 10, 1968... Exactly ten (10) months later. My NOMINATION for an Oscar, on the other hand, came almost 16 months after my death. Who am I? Dan N. http://www.silentfilmguide.com
aftermath
Never mind I read Peter Finch in your previous post. Sorry I'll be back with another guess after some more thought! Message was edited by: aftermath
jdb1
How about James Dean? Died in 1955, nominated for "Giant" in 1956?
daneldorado
You've got it, Judith! James Dean died on September 30, 1955. His film GIANT came out in 1956. He was nominated for Best Actor on January 13, 1957... almost 16 months after his death. Dan N. http://www.silentfilmguide.com
jdb1
Alas, James Dean. Well . . . . . I hold the record for making the most movies before becoming an Oscar-winner. Who am I?
bradtexasranger
Are you Al Pacino?
jdb1
Nope. I made way more movies than Pacino. As a hint, I am a male, and I am one of America's most enduringly popular actors. A very unlikely actor imitated me in a film about 10 years ago, but he wasn't dressed anything like me.
