DownGoesFrazier
On the assumption that Alfred Drake is correct, here is a new one: I went into films fresh out of high school, making my debut in a well-known post-World War II film. I played juvenile supporting roles in a number of "A" films, then played leads in "B" films. I was also featured regularly in a number of famous late '50s-early '60s TV series, including a couple private detective series. I died in my late forties as a result of heart problems. Who am I? visualfeast
You got it Sixes...The clues do fit Alfred Drake, too...and they starred in the great TV production of *MARCO POLO* together....Now you...
lavenderblue19
Tom Cruise ?
lavenderblue19
Thanks,6's. I've made Oscar history twice. Even though I played sweet woman for the most part, my demands in Hollywood were met when I first arrived. I was set to play a plum role in a famous film, but as it turns out I was unable to do the role and it went to another famous actress even though the role was written for me. In later years I returned to the stage where my career first began and I appeared on TV. Who am I ? DownGoesFrazier
Are you Claudette Colbert?
lavenderblue19
Sorry, I'm not Claudette. That plum role in that famous film that was written for me, was written by one of my husbands.
allaboutlana
Are you Helen Hayes?
lavenderblue19
Not Helen. After only 2 years in Hollywood, I got top billing over a very well respected A list actor in a very famous film.

lavenderblue19
Not Tallulah. All these guesses are very good. I was married twice. Both my husbands were writers. I'm running out of clues!
DownGoesFrazier
How about Luise Rainer?
lavenderblue19
No, I'm not Luise. I'm a little younger.
DownGoesFrazier
The thing that's hanging me up is your statement, "I made Oscar history twice". I'm wondering why you worded it this way rather than, "I am a two-time Oscar winner". On this note, my next guess has to be Glenda Jackson. lavenderblue19
Because the statement does not mean I won Oscars twice. No to Glenda.

allaboutlana
Are you Teresa Wright?
lavenderblue19
Congrats- I am Teresa Wright. The only actor to be nominated for their first 3 films. One of only 10 actors to be nominated for both leading and supporting roles in 2 different films in the same year.As a tribute to her in 2005, the year she passed, her name was announced as part of the roll call of former Yankees for her performance in *The Pride of The Yankees* - that was my next clue. The role of Pearl in *Duel of the Sun* was written for her by then husband Niven Busch. But Ms. Wright became pregnant before filming began, she also had top billing over Joseph Cotten in *Shadow of a Doubt* (.Interesting Hollywood info and good reading. Thanks to everybody for their responses. Great job and it's your thread Edited by: lavenderblue19 on Feb 8, 2010 5:59 PM Edited by: lavenderblue19 on Feb 8, 2010 6:03 PM
allaboutlana
Thanks. ?Born and raised in New York, my first major film role came at the age of 26. It would prove to be eventful in more ways than one. I married the actress who played my mother in the picture. She was only eleven years older. Our marriage lasted four years and I was practically thrown out of Hollywood, because I treated her badly and badmouthed her. She just happened to be one of Hollywood?s favorite people. I was one of only two people who was never allowed to be on ?The Tonight Show.? I dabbled in foreign films and even tv, but never found the fame that went with that critically acclaimed movie. But eventually, I found some success in writing, even though the New York Times wouldn?t even review my first book. I finally had gotten some recognition due to the fact that I had predicted the stock market crash of 1962. I would become an investment advisor, so that people would leave alone.? ?Do you know me?? The Lady Eve
Thanks? Most wouldn?t guess it, but I was born in Ireland?I had a long stage career and appeared in only a handful of movies. The first two films I made are classics and I was Oscar-nominated for my first role, one I?d originated on Broadway. I did much TV in the 50s and 60s? The Lady Eve
In my first film, my on-screen husband was a conniving businessman. In my second, my brother was a killer.
